Not many people care about the fact that “I” created it, but more are worried about the fact that “I am not getting profit for it”. Recognition is important for creators. -if we cite and use other people’s ideas when we write, why are there issues when it comes to filming? -Walt Disney even used stuff from public domain and made it relevant for our age -Would we make more progress if we were more freely able to expand on someone else’s ideas? -How can you patent life, something that has been around for centuries? -What if breaking copyright can save lives? |
While watching this video I tried to look at both sides of the argument. I can see how major corporations see using artists’ music and creations as stealing. We are not asking for permission nor are we crediting them for using their songs. But when this issue is looked at deeper, how did I learn how to play the piano?- by using someone else’s songs and playing them in festivals, with some different chords. We need the past to create the future.
There were many facts that surprised me. Walt Disney used ideas that were public domain and made them relevant for our age, but then he copyrighted them and made millions off of them. These ideas weren’t his to begin with and he doesn’t cite where he got the ideas from, but now he can claim all royalties? Brazil used a patent idea for an Aids drug, remixed it and is saving thousands of lives. How can we sue someone for wanting to save lives? Who knows if the cure for cancer is out there with someone sitting on it because they patented it but don’t know how to move onto the next step. Why can’t we take other people’s ideas and build onto them?
If I were an artist, I would be mad if someone took my original creation and remixed it without saying where they got the original piece from. If they cited where they got their idea from, I would be flattered and interested to see what they came up with, it would help me grow as a person and an artist. We are not all the best we can be, there is always room for growth and improvement. With so many generations coming along with new ideas, why not let them play around, create something out of something, help them find their passion, and keep them off of the street. How do you think we have all these fancy dance moves that we see on television? How about all those movies that you see in the theatre that have predictable endings because they follow the same format as the movie you saw last week? Those were all once original creations; remixed and added upon to make them better or different.
I like the way that Brazil is moving. They are using the original ideas of people and creating something new out of them. Everyone wants credit for their work, so why can’t we all just cite where we got our ideas from. We have to cite when we write a paper and use someone else’s ideas, why are film and music media any different? We can all learn so much by remixing and seeing what others can do. I am not saying copy and redistribute media in its original format; that would be stealing. But putting hard work into a project, remixing it and making it your own is art, something we should all be able to use as a medium to express ourselves. Cite where you got your ideas from, give credit where credit is due, and everyone can learn and benefit from what you have to share.
